Toilet Train Cat - Before They Make a Mess
I recently rescued a kitten from the shelter to give to my three year old daughter for her birthday and felt real good about it. However, when my daughter led me to her room one day and pointed out a "present" left by kitty, she exclaimed as only a three year old can, "toilet train cat," while giving me her sternest look. Now I had no idea how to litter train a kitten, so I had to get some advice from the veterinarian. What I found out was cat toilet training measures that new cat owners can take that solves the problem quickly. Are you thinking about getting a kitten and would you like some of my insights for litter training? Then read the following tips that helped me resolve the problem fast.
Litter box and location
I was advised to purchase a deep box and fine grade sand for my kitten. It seems that cats prefer the finer clumping sand as opposed to the coarse clay types. You will also not want to use the scented varieties because cats generally don't like it. The placement of the box should be located in an area that is somewhat secluded and away from the cat's food and water source. The cat will prefer the secluded area and the food and water will not be contaminated by the kick back of litter. You should also consider purchasing a plastic under liner that extends 6 inches around the box for easy clean up of litter that is kicked out of the box. Another idea is to place a scratch mat at the front of the box for the cat to clean their paws after each use.
Toilet training
Fortunately, kittens will naturally want to use a sandy area potty in. Once you have the litter box placed in a secluded area, introduce the kitten to the box. With any luck the cat will take to the box immediately and the cat will be trained. However, young kittens may have to have more training to connect the litter box to a place were they go to the bathroom. If the kitten doesn't use the box right away then keep taking the kitten back to the litter box at regular intervals, especially after eating or when the kitten shows signs of a need to go. Even kittens take to praising from humans, so if the kitten is successful at using the box, a scratch behind the ears and encouraging words will entice the kitten to be litter trained.
Accidents and cleanups
A sure sign that kitty needs to go is when you see them scratching in remote corners. If this happens take the kitten to the litter box immediately and hopefully on in time. Kittens will sometimes do this if the box becomes full, so it is very important the litter box is cleaned regularly, and fresh litter is added. Occasionally an accident will happen, and when it does a complete and thorough clean up will be necessary. Not only will the mess have to be cleaned up, it will also need to be deodorized so the cat will not recognize it as a place of opportunity.
