Why Cats Don't Use Their Litter Box
There are lots of reasons that cats stop using their litter boxes, but the two that I have found to be the biggies are clumps of clumping litter laying on top of the fresh litter and the smell.
Clumping litter is designed to make human intervention in litter boxes less time consuming and what you might think of as cleaner. After all, lifting a clump of litter off the top of the litter is easier than digging around in the litter looking for what is causing the odor isn't it.
Then, of course, there is the plastic bag you put the clump into before depositing it in the garbage and add it to the local land fill. Then there are those that just drop it in the toilet and flush it away. Consider the amount of baked clay litter and the cement like substance added to make it clump clogging up the sewer systems, most of which are running at or near capacity already.
Then there is the smell of the evaporating urine conveniently stored in the clumps of litter lying on top of the unused litter. This is an especially smelly problem for both cat and people if there is a cover on the litter box but removing the cover does not solve the problem.
The real solution is the simplest. Don't use clumping litter and an odor control product that actually works. Your cat will love you and so will your friends and family.
